Medicinal plants used during the plague described in Herbarium of Simon Syrenius (1613) Before effective methods treatment and prevention infections all other infectious diseases were known, attempts made to treat them with natural means. The blight, among others considered following plants: angelica (Angelica archangelica), valerian (Valeriana officinalis), pimpinella, (Pimpinella sp.) common tormentil plant (Potentilla erecta), also onion garlic. Knowledge about medicinal was gathered herbaria. largest Polish Renaissance herbarium Zielnik by Szymon Syreniusz, published Krakow 1613. This work describes over 800 plants, only some against plague. aim is investigate which indicated Syreniusz as means combating pestilential air, what properties assigned how they be used.
